Widespread Tissintite in Strongly Shock‐Lithified Lunar Regolith Breccias

چکیده
Abstract Shock‐lithification is a fundamental process of making rocks from fine‐grained and porous regoliths on the surface Moon. Previous investigations have constrained potential shock pressures during shock‐lithification based experimental numerical simulations. However, pressure temperature conditions not been directly inferred natural lunar breccias. Here, we report discovery widespread tissintite in strongly shock‐lithified meteorites, accompanied occasionally by Si‐rich corundum coesite. The coexistence coesite absence stishovite molten regions indicate 4–8 GPa, which might be boundary between weak strong shock‐lithification. Meanwhile, presence imposes constraint ∼2,300 K for intergranular melts. This has profound significance interpreting behaviors volatile moderately elements remanent magnetization records

The Lunar Regolith
Regolith is a terrestrial term, also used for the Moon. It has been defined as " a general term for the layer or mantle of fragmental and unconsolidated rock material, whether residual or transported and of highly varied character, that nearly everywhere forms the surface of the land and overlies or covers bedrock. It includes rock debris of all kinds, [including] volcanic ash. .. " (Bates and ...
متن کاملIsotopic variability of nitrogen in lunar regolith.
Hashizume et al. (1) claim that the distribution and isotopic composition of nitrogen in the lunar regolith can be explained by a two-component mixing model. Their report, however, fails to discuss the bulk of existing relevant data— data that show unequivocally that the conclusions in (1) cannot be correct. Although the data, derived by several different groups on many different samples using ...
متن کاملEvaluations of lunar regolith simulants
Apollo lunar regolith samples are not available in quantity for engineering studies with In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). Therefore, with expectation of a return to the Moon, dozens of regolith (soil) simulants have been developed, to some extent a result of inefficient distribution of NASA-sanctioned simulants. In this paper, we review many of these simulants, with evaluations of their sho...
